Whenever I was asked who I want to be when I grow up, I always have one ready answer: to be a PMAer.
But I was never given a chance to pursue this dream coz Pa, who’s a retired military officer, didn’t approve of my appetite to military service. I insisted that I want to be in PMA and planned to choose Philippine Air Force as branch of service later on but I wasn’t able to get, not even an ounce, of Pa’s support. I remember how water came to my eyes that day but I never shed a tear, at least in front of Pa. I always want to be his tough panganay, his trophy, his angel.
And then there came Jonathan. After six years of solitary pampering from Ma and Pa, there came a big brown-haired baby who made my Ma stay in the hospital for weeks because of a diabetic complication from a Cesarian operation. I may not have verbally expressed it but I hated Jo the first time I saw him.
All the attention were shifted from me to Jon. He loved to cry a lot, poo on his crib, and eat Gerber. It was also thru him that I was introduced to different fake faith healers that informed us that Jo’s third-eye has opened thus making him see elementals we normal people couldn’t see. At first, I didn’t believe what was said but when they told me I also have a third-eye but is only slightly-opened, I started understanding his agony.
And then he studied at Rizal Science High School, probably the best school in Rizal. I was envious. If I had studied at St. Scho Manila all my gradeschool life, I could have gone to a good highschool like RizSci too! He also entered UP two years after I got my baccalaureate degree. Not that I’m sad or bitter about it. I was, in fact, ecstatic when DJ and I learned that he passed UPCAT and will be pursuing a degree in Engineering.
But when we learned that he’s one of the lucky 942 who passed the PMA exam, I felt cursed. Bakit naman ganon? Yes, I inherited all the i-eat-a-lot-but-don’t-gain-weight genes in the fam PERO BAKIT NAMAN LAHAT NG TALINO NASA KANYA???
